The subject I am choosing for my interview has been someone who I have been with and have looked up to for my whole life. My mother, who is also one of my co-workers, is a leader in the workplace and acts as a role model to me. Some of the qualities that identify her as a leader is her responsibility, dependability, communication, and most importantly her critical thinking skills while on the job or in the real world. Together, we work at an outpatient surgery center. She works as a sterilization technician and is also responsible for material management. It is her responsibility to ensure the surgery center has adequate supplies necessary for the procedures. She has more of an informal leadership role where although it may not be in her title, it is essential for her to be a leader/communicator for her success. Without her, the sterile instruments, or the materials, surgeries would not be possible.
I would primarily work in the PACU/Pre-Op areas as a medical assistant so I was not able to see my mother at work often. However, on quiet days I would make sure to stop in and help her with whatever she may need. I was always amazed with her knowledge base (could tell me the name of every single instrument) and organization skills. I am excited to formally interview my mother to learn some new things about how she leads and manages her work that I might have not picked up on while I was there. I think it will also be interesting to gain more insight on what goes on in the background of the surgery center. Having an understanding of the healthcare team from the bottom up will only help to make me more knowledgeable and give me a better perspective of what it takes to be successful.
